Download the new Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 at : Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 Download Now! (from the Firefox dev pages)
Yes, as the home page for this Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 codename “Shiretoko” says “It’s Coming Soon”. I’d advise you check it today instead. Why? Because it’s the fastest browser on this or any other planet. Here is the latest browser speed test report comparing Google Chrome, Various versions of Firefox (including 3.1b2), Safari (surprisingly slow) and Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer IE 8 Beta 2 (the slowest of the bunch):
Based on recent reports, can anyone tell me how microsoft can throw a billion dollars and 7 years of development into Internet Explorer Development and come out dead last in performance and 2nd in popularity? Whoever is responsible for that should be flipping burgers somewhere by next week.
The current rate of adoption across the different browsers currently (November 2008) looks like this:
Firefox - 44.2%
- Internet Explorer 7 - 26.6%
- Internet Explorer 6 - 26.9%
- Google Chrome - 3.1%
- Mozilla - 0.4%
- Apple Safari - 2.7%
- Opera - 2.3%
Statistics sourced from W3Schools Browser Stats Project
This release is all about a massive boost in performance for all your websites that use Javascript - It’s called The TraceMonkey Javascript Engine. The performance is really good In fact for comparison on Gmail it’s almost 20% faster than Explorer 8 Beta 2.
Performance enhancements in the Gecko rendering engine also give great speed gains over the current versions of Explorer 8 Beta 2 and yes, even against Apple’s very fast Safari Browser.
Private Browsing is also new in this release - Go anywhere incognito and leave no traces.
There will be one more beta release before the final version is available for download. I will be there to help make Firefox Download Day history again. Last time a new official version was released it set internet world records for the most downloads in a single day. The even sent out personalized PDF certificates thanking people for downloading it on that day to help them make the new worlds record.
DOWNLOAD FIREFOX 3.1 Beta 2 NOW AND HAVE A REALLY FAST DAY

Until December 17th Firefox worked quite well…until the automatic update that turned the browser into total garbage….with the lack of any support from Mozilla, I find I can no longer download files in Yahoo mail using Firefox….fortunately Internet Explorer still functions perfectly with Yahoo…..Yahoo support in California checked out downloading at their end in California and everything works properly…..I have cleared cache, cookies, history, turned off and on Trend Micro, uninstalled and reinstalled 3.1, updated Java, and I still only end up saving a mass of computer code instead of a photo or file……I am now ready to totally uninstall everything about Mozilla and go to Opera !

I had the same problem. I went to the MS website and downloaded and installed Windows 7 Beta again. It’s all good now. I think there was an unannounced bad update cycle that ate a lot of machines.
It was related to how it interfaces with Javascript and unfortunately you cannot install manually any version of java on windows 7. It won’t complete. I haven’t reported on it since It’s a little like a UFO report. I saw something, it was weird, now it’s gone.
