I test a ton of software. I’d say easily 90% of it either doesn’t work, or doesn’t do what I want it to do. I uninstall it within a few days and that’s that.

I think everyone has experienced how Windows computers slow down over time and how a fresh install of Windows always makes the machine fast and gets rid of all the little problems that seem to accumulate in the Windows system.

I did get that fresh feeling of a new install, but first I had the angry feeling of something eating my computer.

As the geekiest guy in my neighborhood, I am the guy that has fix computers for pretty much everybody. I was upgrading a friends computer two weeks ago and after installing a brand new windows vista sp2 on his computer he gave me the list of software he wanted installed.  It’s the usual list, PC-Tools Spyware Doctor with Anti-Virus, Microsoft Office 2007, Photoshop CS4, Firefox 3.1 Beta …… and something called RegClean.

He said it was fantastic so I downloaded it and installed it on my much abused office machine and gave it a go. We’ll needless to say it’s fantastic.  I have the fresh install feeling on my computer and without the install… yeah!

It really does clean the registry, defrag and compress the registry, removed (in my case) 500+ problems and includes the easiest startup program manager I’ve seen.

You click one button. It whirls little icons around, says how many problems you have and you click fix. After that you REALLY ALL all fixed up and ready to go.

You can even backup and restore your registry in just about two clicks.

I am officially adding it to my Recommended Software list along with PC-Tools Excellent Spyware Doctor with Anti-Virus.

Free BIOS Scan - Identify and Update Your BIOS with BiosAgentPlus

Why this is cool? Because Microsoft Windows Vista Update does not know of or have sources for everything you need to keep your drivers up to date.

Why this isn’t cool: I’ve got Windows Vista Ultimate and it was expensive.  I didn’t buy Windows Vista Average or Retarded ‘editions’.  Microsoft should have built this into their update system.

I’ve just discovered a utility called Driver Magician.  It’s not free, but you should try it out at least once.

The idea is that it searches your computer’s hardware for all the chips and devices that live inside it and makes a list.   It then uses that list to check the vendors websites for all those parts to see if they have an updated version.

This showed me a lot of little updates that my computer needed. I use Windows Update regularly and it made no mention of the items that Driver Magician found.

My computer is now a little bit faster and definitely more stable.  In fact I am grossly overclocking it right now and it’s still stable.

The other important function of Driver Magician is BACKING UP YOUR DRIVERS. It will actually automatically backup all your device drivers and allow you to restore them should some future update break them.

It will also find unknown devices and help to determine what they actually are and where to get a driver for them.

Summary:  Essential Support Toolbox Item.  My drivers are now up to date and I got a lot more system stability and overclock capability.
